John Barnes and Ray Wilkins gunning for Malaysian hotseat

Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) have confirmed that more than 30 candidates have applied for the Malaysian national team head coach role.

The national team post has been the talking point among so far, with most Malaysians hoping to see the new appointment help revive their fortunes on the international scene, after the 10-0 defeat to UAE last month.

Secretary-General of FAM, Datuk Hamidin confirmed that the application will be closed at the end of this month, and that more than 30 individuals – including several big names – have filed their official application.

“Until today (yesterday), we have received more than 30 applications including John Barnes and Ray Wilkins. The vacancy will be closed at the end of this month.

“As for the U23 team, 50 candidates have applied for the job and the vacancy will be closed next Monday,” he told Kosmo yesterday.

John Barnes and Ray Wilkins have now joined the long list of the coaches who are interested with the Malaysian job, including Bojan Hodak, George Boateng, Ashley Westwood, Rene Meulensteen as well as the current interim coach of Malaysia, Datuk Ong Kim Swee.
