Goh Jin Wei excluded from Podium Program

Discouraging news for badminton young gun Goh Jin Wei as she was not listed for the Podium Program this year but the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) is confident that the exclusion will not dampen her spirits and in fact will make her strive to be better to make it on to the list in the near future.

General Secretary Ng Chin Chai claimed that Jin Wei may have been left out of the program because she did not fulfill the criteria stated.

“One of the criteria was that the athlete listed in the program needs to be an athlete that will be able to secure a gold medal in the Olympics, Asia and Commonwealth Games. Maybe she was not included because she did not meet those criteria,” he said during the launching of the Podium Program in the National Sports Institute yesterday.

“We (BAM) will try to make an appeal and hopefully get her listed but I’m very sure that one day she will definitely be a part of this program.”

Last September, BAM suggested the names of eight players- including Jin Wei- for the program but only seven were officially selected.

The players chosen were national ace Lee Chong Wei, men’s doubles duo Goh V Shem- Tan Wee Kiong, women’s doubles pair Vivian Hoo- Woon Khe Wei and also mixed doubles top seed Chan Peng Soon- Goh Liu Ying.

The coaches appointed for the program are Hendrawan (men’s singles), Jeremy Gan (men’s doubles), Wong Pei Ty (women’s doubles) and Chin Ee Hui (mixed doubles).
