Marcus Fraser pips Lee Soo Min to clinch Maybank Championship title

Australian golfer Marcus Fraser was forced to sweat it out before finally lifting the inaugural Maybank Malaysia Open trophy after overcoming Lee Soo Min at the end of the competition yesterday.

Soo Min, 22, was comfortably ahead by three strokes before yesterday. However, two late bogeys on the 16th and 18th hole were enough for Marcus Fraser to win by two strokes.

Fraser carded a closing three-under-par 68 at Royal Selangor Golf Club (RSGC) to win at 15 under, while Soo Min ended in second place with 73, tied with Miguel Tabuena of Philippines (68).

His triumph also ended his run of defeats on the European tour after winning the Ballantine’s Championship in 2010.

“Every time I join a competition, my kids will always ask me to bring home a trophy. Now, I can return home with a sense of pride,” he said, according to Harian Metro.

“Soo Min made a big mistake at the end of the competition. I just wanted to make sure not to repeat his mistakes.

“My hands were shaking at my last putt because I have not felt that sensation in a long time, and I was relieved when the ball entered the hole,” he added.

That was Marcus Fraser’s third European tour win after joining 292 competitions.

He managed to scoop up a grand prize of $500,000 (RM2.1 million).
