Singapore Open: Zulfadli Zulkiffli sent packing in first round

National shuttler Zulfadli Zulkiffli has been eliminated in the first round of the OUE Singapore Open after losing to Indonesia’s Christie Jonatan at the Singapore Indoor Stadium today.

The 23 year-old American-born player lasted only 31 minutes as he lost 14-21, 16-21.

The World Youth Champion defeated India’s R. M. V. Gurusaidutt 21-14, 16-21, 21-17 in the first qualifying match yesterday, before defeating his brother Zulhelmi Zulkiffli 21-14, 21-11 in the second qualifying match to book a spot in the first round of the OUE Singapore Open.

Chong Wei Feng, who decided to quit the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) two weeks ago, was handed an early elimination in the qualifying stages after he lost out to Indonesia’s Sukamta Evert 21-19, 14-21, 13-21 yesterday morning.

Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, Hoon Thien How-Teo Kok Siang and Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong will face Phillipines’ Peter Gabriel Magnaye-Alvin Morada, Indonesia’s Angga Pratama-Ricky Karanda Suwardi and China’s Chai Biao-Hong Wei respectively later today.
