Malaysian tennis contingent gunning for 2017 SEA Games victory

The national tennis squad will go out of their way to qualify for the final and win a gold medal at the 2017 Southeast Asian Games which will be held in Kuala Lumpur in August next year.

National coach Muliyadi Jamal has singled out Jawariah Noordin as the woman to win gold.

“I want the players to improve their rankings, which would avoid us from facing against the stronger opponents such as Thailand and Philippines,” he said as quoted by Sinar Harian.

“This time around, I think the women have more potential than the men. My personal target is to have at least one athlete (male or female) to qualify for the final,” Muliyadi concluded.

The tennis squad received a visit from 2017 SEA Games chef-de-mission (CDM) Datuk Marina Chin, who used to be the poster girl of her athletics squad back in the day.

Malaysia have only won the gold medal once in tennis after the women’s doubles duo of Radhika Menon and Lim Kheow Suen tasted success in the 1973 SEA Games.
