Rio 2016: Welson Sim wants to compete in three events

National swimmer Welson Sim wants to qualify for one more event in the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil after already creating history by qualifying for two events.

Welson Sim is currently waiting on the decision from the International Swimming Federation (FINA) whether he is able to participate in the men’s 1500 metre freestyle event in August.

“I will focus on the two events (200m and 400m freestyle) that I have qualified through the first category, even if I do not get the chance to go for a third,” he said as quoted by Utusan.

Welson, 19, who was troubled with health problems during the Mare Nostrum Circuit last Sunday, recorded a time of 15:32.67 in the men’s 1500 metre freestyle event and came in sixth place. However, he needed a time of 15:14.77 to qualify through the first category.

The swimmers in Category A will gain automatic qualification to the Olympic Games in Rio, whereas Category B swimmers will have to wait for the final decision from the organization.

“I want to break my record, gain experience and swim with the best athletes in the world.”

The Olympic Games will begin on August 5 and end on August 21.
