Selangor part ways with Robert Cornthwaite

The Football Association of Selangor (FAS) have decided to cut ties with Australian central defender Robert Cornthwaite after serving the club since the beginning of last season.

The ex-Adelaide United man has been in poor form throughout the season, which saw the club end the first half of the campaign in third place, behind Johor Darul Ta’azim (JDT) and FELDA United. They have conceded 15 goals in 12 Malaysia Super League (MSL) matches.

Selangor team manager Amirudin Shari has confirmed that the 6-foot-5 defender was released from The Red Giants because of a number of injury concerns throughout the season.

“He (Robert) has been out of the game for a while because of a lengthy injury problem and we unfortunately had to make a couple of changes,” he said as quoted by Stadium Astro.

“We have found a few candidates to Robert from the Greek League and the Thai League.”

Robert Cornthwaite joined Selangor in 2015 after replacing Australian compatriot Steve Pantelidis. He was in the starting line-up that defeated Kedah to win the Malaysia Cup.
