6 things you should know about the gruelling Spartan Race

The Spartan race is just as ‘spartan’ as it sounds; a great distance to run while enduring some fierce obstacles along the way; it’s not for the weak! The Spartan Sprint just wrapped up on the 8th of October at Putrajaya with an overwhelming response from Malaysians.

Here are few things things that you ought to know should you want to participate in this arduous and demanding race:

  1. There are 3 types of races you can choose from

The Spartan race, although toilsome, is considerate. The race has three different course, for beginners, intermediates, and experts. Beginners can go for the Sprint, intermediates can go for Super, and if you think you’re a beast, then, well, go for the Beast. Learn more about it here. They also have one for kids!

2. The Spartan race has been to Malaysia 3 times

That makes Malaysia the first country country in Southeast Asia to host all three races, completing a trifecta of the world’s biggest obstacle course series. The most recent one held was the Sprint.

3. So what is a trifecta?

All three races completed is a trifecta. A racer who has weathered all three obstacle course races (the sprint, super and beast) in the same calendar year will earn a trifecta, and you will also get an exclusive trifecta medal!

4. The obstacles are designed for adrenaline junkies

Barbed wire crawl (how cool is that?), bucket brigade, fire jump, rope climb, spear throw, wall jump, atlas carry are just some of a long, never-ending list of obstacles waiting for you at the course.
5. Whenever you fail to complete an obstacle, you do burpees
Yes, not one, not two, not even ten but 30 for each obstacle you pass! Rumour has it the Spartan race has churned a massive amount of burpees experts. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

6. The Malaysia Spartan race director quit his banking job to pursue sports
The 25-year-old Douglas Lau quit his full-time job as a banker (much to the dismay of his parents) to pursue his one true love, sports. An avid runner himself, he got roped into the Spartan race when it arrived in Malaysia last year. He is also a running coach for young athletes.
