Does Datuk Vida’s GST scandal spell doom for Kelantan sponsorship deal?

Earlier this year, Dr. Vida’s decision to sponsor the Kelantan Football Association (KAFA) drew a lot of attention. In fact, The Star even published an entire article in pink fonts to commemorate the event.

Vida Beauty signed a two-year contract with KAFA worth RM 16 million, and for the first time ever, we had a football team proudly donning pink jerseys. With the new, promising deal, KAFA was certain that they could start winning leagues and trophies, and probably buy the best players in the market.

However, in light of such a reassuring deal, rumours about KAFA not receiving the sponsorship money wafted about. KAFA’s mediocre performance also resulted in Dr. Vida threatening to pull the plug on multiple occasions.

Today, The Star reports that Dr. Vida was charged for dodging her Goods and Services tax (GST) payments of up to RM 4.2 million. She has also failed to submit the relevant GST statements to the Customs Department. She has pled not guilty.

KAFA’s President Annuar Musa clarified that the sponsorship they signed with Vida Beauty is valid until November 2017. But with this scandal emerged, what would become of KAFA’s future? She is still tied to the contract, but can she still afford to adhere by her RM 16 million sponsorship promises?
