Ex-French footballer shoots wild elephant, claims to be reducing ‘overpopulation’

That is some Dan Brown’s Inferno theory right there.

Former Marseille and Lyon footballer Pascal Olmeta has invoked rage from fans and animal activists after pictures of him smiling next to an elephant he shot dead surfaced. The pictures are from a video from a trip to Africa in 2011.

The Frenchman posted the photos from the his hunting trip on a charity website and claimed that he participated in the hunt because of overpopulation concerns. There is also a distressing video available, it shows the elephant wincing and crying in pain after taking a bullet in its head.

After bringing the elephant down, Olmeta smiled and laughed as he was congratulated by his partner.

“The problem of overpopulation of elephants in Zimbabwe is a real issue for the country.” Olmeta told The Sun. “Elephants cause irreparable damage to the houses. They are also the cause of many deaths among the local populations.”

We don’t know how true that is, because we failed to find any articles or news relating elephants to problems in Zimbabwe, except that the elephants there are being poisoned for their ivory.
