2016 RMS International Regatta race blown wide open

The second passage race for the 2016 Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta (RMSIR) saw the Class One and Class Two races being thrown open when the defending champions were pushed to lower positions. The overnight race began on Monday in Pangkor and finished yesterday in Penang.

In Class One, ‘Windsikher’ (Sarab Jeet Singh) won line honours but had to settle for fourth place after ‘EFG Mandrake’ (Fred Kinmonth and Nick Burns) sailed to the top of the class.

The Royal Malaysian Navy’s ‘Uranus’ finished second, followed by ‘Zanzibar’ (Jonathan Mahoney) in third. Fifth place went to ‘Black Baza’ (Steve Manning) while the sixth Class One boat, ’Team Hollywood’ (Ray Roberts) had to drop out of the race to Penang after hitting a sunken barge.

In Class Two, ’Zuhal’ (the Malaysian Armed Forces) finished at the top followed by “Starlight’ (Andrew Cocks). Defending champion ‘Antipodes’ (Geoff Hill) finished third while ‘Outlaw’ (Adrian Bell) was fourth.

Class Three defending champion, ‘Fujin’ (skippered by David Fuller), stayed the course to maintain its top position. ‘Insanity’ (skippered by John Kara) took second place while ‘Nijinsky’ (Jeff Harris) finished third. Sailing into fourth and fith place were ‘Popeye’ (Craig Douglas) and ‘Pasaya’ (Schle Wood-Thanan).

Results are still being tabulated for Class Five and Class Six and will be available on the RMSIR website (www.rmsir.com).

The 27th RMSIR kicked off on 19 November 2016, where the fleet made its staggered start from Port Klang for the first overnight passage race, which was to Pangkor. Sailors will be competing in the fun Rickshaw Races at Straits Quay in Penang later today before heading back to the water tomorrow for the inshore races. The fleet will then head to Langkawi on 24 November for the final passage race and inshore races. The final awards ceremony will be held at the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club in Kuah, Langkawi on 26 November.

The RMSIR is organised annually by the RSYC in association with the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) and the Malaysia Sailing Association; assisted by the Royal Malaysia Police and Royal Malaysian Navy.

Known for its unpredictable winds, weather and tide, the RMSIR provides excitement for even the most experienced of sailors, along with an interesting challenge. Add to that a little bit of sightseeing and fun social events at every stop and you have a regatta with everything.
