Shock frontrunner emerges for top role at Football Association of Malaysia

Ever since FAM president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah announced his resignation last year, there has been a lot of speculation about who will take over the post.

Many names like have been thrown around since, including AirAsia group CEO Tony Fernandes, former president of Kelantan FA (KAFA) Tan Sri Annuar Musa, and even our own prime minister, Najib Razak.

The speculations can cease now that FAM board members have starting voting for their preferred candidates. The top three contenders for the post of the FAM president are former home ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Dr Aseh Che Mat, former KAFA president Tan Sri Annuar Musa, and as it turns out, Minister of Youth and Sports, Khairy Jamaluddin.

Prior to Khairy Jamaluddin – who is the latest addition to the list – FAM EXCO and Melaka United’s Deputy President Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mahadi told Berita Harian that Tan Sri Dr Aseh seemed to be the popular candidate for the post.

But now, the Youth and Sports minister seems to be leading the race, with 12 out 20 votes inclined towards him. This comes as a major shock, because Khairy was supposedly not able to contest due to his position as a cabinet minister.

“So far, Khairy has the highest votes. He is followed by Tan sri Aseh Che Mat, who has about three votes, followed by Tan Sri Annuar Musa who has one vote.” a source told Berita Harian.

The nominations will close at 5pm today. The final list of candidates will then be presented to the FAM EXCO by 20th February, where the members will shortlist their candidates and vote for the new committee board for 2017 until 2021.
