Philippines’ finest young shuttlers to play in Karyn Velez memorial tournament

The top junior players from across the Philippines have been invited by chief sponsor Toby’s Sports to partake in the Toby’s Sports Karyn Velez Memorial Youth Badminton Championships between October 22 and 25.

The tournament will be based at the Powermash Badminton Center in Makati, with the exception of the final on the last day which is scheduled to take place at Robinsons Place in Manila.

The national junior players as selected by the Philippines Badminton Association will compete against those school and club players who can register by the October 18 deadline.

The tournament‘s organisation comes in honour of the memory of former Philippines number one Karyn Velez, known affectionately as “Chibby”, who unfortunately met her demise in a midnight car accident in Manila on August 15 last year.

Velez’s death sent shockwaves through the lives of young aspiring shuttlers not only in her home country of the Philippines, but also in Malaysia where she trained at the Kuala Lumpur Rackets Club.

Toby’s Sports, for whom Velez was an ambassador, has since partnered with major brands such as Adidas and Gatorade among additional domestic partners to sponsor the tournament in her name.
