Exclusive: Marcos Antonio will be crucial for JDT – Shebby

Shebby Singh claims that Johor DT central defender Marcos Antonio will be their most important player on the pitch this weekend, when they take on Pahang in the Malaysia Cup final.

The Brazilian defender has quickly established himself as a fan favourite after replacing Baihakki Khaizan last April, and as they prepare to face Pahang this weekend, Shebby thinks that his performance at the heart of their defence, will be extremely pivotal.

Speaking exclusively to FourthOfficial.com, the Johor DT football consultant said: “I feel Marcos Antonio in central defence is key as he brings calm to the defense. His physical presence is vital as Pahang do tend to go direct.

“Zainal is a great friend and has always believed in an attacking game and we expect the same come Saturday.

“The team that goes out to enjoy the occasion ends up winning the Cup! Nice and relaxed off the pitch and calm and composed on it, makes the difference.”

Johor DT qualified for the final after a nerve-wrecking semi finals tie against Felda United. They lost the first leg 4-3, but according to Shebby, there was an air of confidence ahead of the second leg, in which they eventually triumphed 3-1 to progress into the finals.

“The feeling was of quiet confidence, we knew we had not adapted well to the wet conditions in the first leg besides not having played too well. As a group, we felt we had seen the best of Felda while we could still change a couple of gears at home with the partisan fans we have.”

A victory for Johor DT this weekend, will see them clinch their second title of the year, having lifted the Super League trophy in July. It would also mark a tremendous shift in paradigm for Johor football, something that Shebby credits to the drive and motivation of the Johor Crown Prince.

“The key has been the drive and dynamism of our President and Crown Prince Tunku Ismail.

“He has left no stone unturned and in all honesty, we are inspired by His Highness passion and in-depth knowledge of the modern game. We play catch up to His Highness 24/7 schedule!”
