Li Na Comes Off WTA Rankings

Li Na, who retired from professional tennis in September, has officially come off the WTA Rankings.

She announced her retirement from the sport just a month after she was ranked world number 2 in August.

Despite not playing since Wimbledon, her performance in the first six months of the year were still good enough to keep her at the number 9 spot up to last week’s year-end WTA rankings.

With Li now out of the rankings, Angelique Kerber goes from No.10 to No.9, Dominika Cibulkova went up a spot to 10th, returning to the career-high she first set in March, while Ekaterina Makarova also moved up a spot to 11th, putting her on the verge of breaking into the top 10 for the first time ever.

There was also a breakthrough a little lower on the list, with WTA’s rising star Garbiñe Muguruza, who wasn’t even in the top 50 when the season began, rising to 20th place, to become just the seventh Spanish player in WTA history to break into the top 20.

The other six with their career-highs, are Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario (No.1), Conchita Martínez (No.2), Carla Suárez Navarro (No.14), Anabel Medina Garrigues (No.16) and Magüi Serna (No.19).
