Djokovic ends 2014 as World No. 1

Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic will end the 2014 season of tennis as the World No. 1, after clinching a victory over Tomas Berdych in the quarter finals of the ATP World Tour.

The victory doesn’t only push him into the semis of the ATP World Tour, but also ensured that he earns the required amount of points to confirm his place at the top of the World ranking as far as 2014 is concerned.

“Being No. 1 of the world is the pinnacle of the sport,” Djokovic said.

“One of the highest and most difficult challenges is to be No. 1 nowadays, especially because the tennis has become very competitive in the last five, ten years, very physical. To have a shot at No. 1 of the world, you need to be consistently healthy and successful throughout the year.

“I believe everything happens for a reason. So I’m here for a reason, and I managed to finish the year as No. 1 for a reason,” he added.

Djokovic’s 6-2, 6-2 win over Berdych further cemented his status as massive favourites to win the tournament, though Roger Federer is also on fiery form, oozing past Andy Murray with ease, winning 6-0, 6-1.

Both men are on course to meet in the final, though Djokovic and Federer would have to manoeuver past Kei Nishikori and Stan Wawrinka respectively.
