Hong Kong Open qualifying round

Hoon Thien How-Tan Boon Heong got off to a good start at the Hong Kong Open.

They first defeated Taiwan’s Chen Hung-ling-Wang Chi-lin 21-14, 21-13 before thrashing Lim Khim Wah-Ow Yao Han 21-10, 21-11 in the second qualifying round.

They are next scheduled to face world Denmark’s Kim Astrup Sorensen-Anders Skaarup Sorensen in the first round of the main draw.

Mixed doubles pair Tan Aik Quan-Lai Pei Jing also breezed through the qualifiers, defeating Taiwan’s Huang Po-jui-Shuai Pei-ling 21-18, 21-10 before beating locals Yeung Shing Choi-Ng Wing Yung 21-9, 21-9 in the second qualifying round.

Aik Quan-Pei Jing will meet fourth seeds Ko Sung-hyun-Kim Ha-na of South Korea today.

In men’s singles, independent shuttlers Mohd Arif Abdul Latif and Tan Chun Seang fell in the first round of the qualifiers.

Arif lost 12-21, 20-22 to India’s Ajay Jayaram while Chun Seang, was defeated 11-21, 13-21 by Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long.

Chong Wei Feng will be the sole Malaysian men’s singles representative in the main draw. He will be up against eighth seed and world No. 9, Tian Houwei of China.
