Malaysia Closer To Axiata Cup Semis

Defending champions, Malaysia, got a step closer to clinching a spot in the semifinals of the Axiata Cup, after beating the Philippines 4-0 in in Jakarta.

Malaysia now moves into the third spot behind Indonesia and Thailand, and a win against Singapore in their final match tomorrow would help seal a spot in the semis.

Only the top four teams will advance to the semifinals, which will be held at the KL Badminton Stadium in Cheras on Sunday and Monday.

The Axiata Cup, the richest badminton event with a prize money of RM3.42 million, features eight teams; Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, Asian All Stars and European All Stars.

Chong Wei Feng defeated Jayson Oba-on – 21-12, 21-14

Tee Jing Yi thrashed Airah Mae Nicole Aldo – 21-12, 21-12.

Tan Boon Heong/Tan Wee Kiong thumped Philip Joper Escueta/Ronel Estanisao 24-22, 21-11

Chan Peng Soon/Lai Pei Jing beat Peter Gabriel Magnaye/Eleanor Cristine Inlayo 21-16, 21-17.
