Michel Platini reiterates desire to introduce ‘white card’

UEFA president Michel Platini who proposed the concept of a white card back in October, has reiterated his perverse desire to do so yet again; claiming that football can take cue from it’s usage in other sports.

His proposition was initially rejected by FIFA President Sepp Blatter, but Platini thinks that this mechanism will be effective in mitigating violent and incessant behaviour on the pitch.

Speaking at the International Sports Conference in Dubai, Platini said: “I think we should learn from other sports, like rugby, who have used this system.”

“The white card is a new initiative. It is related to the behaviour of football players. Play-acting, criticism on the field, these are not accepted by people who love the game.

“This white card would send off a player for a few minutes, maybe five or 10. This would be a way to promote the game among fans who don’t want to see this.

“Yellow cards will still exist too but it might be interesting to have another card.”
