UEFA Champions League: Tuesday Wrap Up

FC Porto are through to the quarter finals of the Champions League after securing a massive 4-0 victory over FC Basel last night, thus concluding a 5-1 win on aggregate.

The Portuguese side were absolutely rampant at home, destroying Basel’s pre-match hopes, having secured a favourable 1-1 draw during the first leg. Yacine Brahimi opened the scoring 14 minutes into the game, curling home an impeccable free-kick to put Porto ahead.

But Basel were still in it, pushing hard until the half time mark, and they must’ve gone into the break, hoping to come back in the second half and bounce back. But Hector Herrera fired a goal after the restart to make it 2-0 and 3-1 on aggregate.

Casemeiro then fired a terrific free-kick from outside the box, giving the home side a whopping 4-1 lead on aggregate. But just when you thought Basel had experienced enough misery, Vincent Aboubakar scored with 15 minutes left on the clock to effectively complete a resounding 5-1 win on aggregate; sending Porto into the last eight.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid and Schalke contested an explosive affair at the Santiago Bernabeu last night, where seven goals were scored during the match.

With a 2-0 lead from the first leg, Madrid were expecting to breeze through this one, but they were given a reality check 20 minutes into the game, as Fuchs fired home to put the away side ahead.

But five minutes later, the scare caused by Fuchs’ goal was nullified when Cristiano Ronaldo scored to equalize and make it 1-1. Schalke though, kept going and eventually seized the lead on the 40th minute mark as Klaas Jan Huntelaar fired home to restore their lead.

Moments before the half time whistle was blown, Ronaldo came to Madrid’s rescue again, scoring to make it 2-2 as both sides went into the break after an action-packed first 45 minutes.

Seven minutes after the restart, Karim Benzema finally handed Madrid the lead with a fine finish, only for Schalke to make it 3-3 through Sane on the 57th minute.

The tension within the Bernabeu sky-rocketed in the last 10 minutes when Huntelaar scored another goal to give them a 4-3 lead, but Madrid held on to ultimately complete a 5-4 win on aggregate to book their place in the quarter finals.
