Miami Open: Rafael Nadal suffers third round exit

14-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal suffered a shocking third round exit at the Miami Open, after being defeated by fellow Spaniard, Fernando Verdasco.

The four-time finalist contested a rather edgy match against Verdasco, though the latter eventually triumphed 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. Nadal lost the first set, but he fought back to break the 31 year-old with a four point lead in the second set. That being said, Verdasco did not give in, and he bounced back in the final set, to clinch his spot in the last 16.

Meanwhile, world number one Serena William only needed 41 minutes to wrap up a 6-1, 6-1 victory against 15 year-old Californian Cici Bellis in the third round.

“It wasn’t like, ‘Oh, I’m so happy to win this match,’ ” said Williams to AP

“It was tough. She’s young and her being an American, you want to see people like her do well.”

The top seed, who is seeking to clinch her eighth Key Biscayne title, will next play Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova.
