Nicol David, Sazali Samad given national recognition

8-time squash world champion Datuk Nicol David and bodybuilder Sazali Abd Samad have been voted as National Sportswoman and Sportsman of the year at an award ceremony that was held yesterday.

The Malaysian squash queen surpassed six other nominees, including Sin Li Jane (bowling, Cheong Jun Hoong (diving), Nur Suryani Talib (shooting), Tan Li Lian (bodybuilding), Syakilla Salni (karate) and Siti Zalina Ahmad (lawn bowls) to receive the award for the 10th time.

She is the longest reigning world number one in the history of squash, having been on top for 108 months now. But beyond that, she has also secured a total of 79 titles, and 99 tour finals in her career.

“Thank you for selecting me once again as National Sportswoman. I am looking forward to do more this year,” said Nicol through a recorded video clip.

The Penang-born ace was in exceptional form throughout 2014, as she went on to clinch her eighth world open title and her eighth British Open title. Besides that, she also secured gold at the Commonwealth Games and two golds at the Asian Games.

Meanwhile, 10-time Mr. Universe title holder, Sazali Abd Samad was delighted to receive his 4th Sportsman of the Year award and says that it will only spur him towards greater heights.

“This award will motivate me to continue working hard for success.” Sazali was quoted as saying by Bernama.

“This success did not come the easy way since hard work, a high level of commitment, discipline and physical condition is needed,”

Alongside their awards, both athletes will also receive RM20,000 in cash, a blazer, and two Malaysia Airlines (MAS) business class flight tickets to Australia.
