Zulfadli said to be dropped to accommodate LCW

BAM are set to drop Zulfadli Zulkifli from their World Championship plans, in order to accommodate the presence of Lee Chong Wei in the squad.

Only the two top players from Malaysia would be allowed to participate, and considering that Chong Wei is currently ranked behind Zulfadli and Chong Wei Feng, BAM appealed for a wildcard slot to be granted to Chong Wei.

However, the appeal was ultimately rejected, forcing BAM into making a tough decision. BAM’s Datuk Seri Mohamad Norza Zakaria had reiterated that they need Chong Wei’s participation in the World Championship, in order to allow him to qualify for the Rio Olympics.

Hence, they have now opted to drop Zulfadli, which will allow Chong Wei to accompany Wei Feng in Jakarta later this year; a decision that left the former frustrated.

“Why sacrifice me, an outsider who did not use a single cent from BAM?,” Zulfadli told Utusan.

He claims that the decision to erase his name from the list was unfair as he earned his qualification by merit. “I am not a player under BAM. They did not pay anything for the tournaments I participated, in fact it was all from my own expenses. So why should I be the one that has to sacrifice?”

“I am fine with Chong Wei taking part in the event but it should be Wei Feng that has to be sacrificed, not me,” the 22 year-old added.
