Nadal demoted to 7th spot on ATP world rankings

Following Rafael Nadal’s defeat to Andy Murray in the Madrid Masters, the Spaniard has slipped down three places in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Rankings to number seven, which is his lowest rank in ten years.

The last time Nadal was ranked below the top five was in May 2 2005, where he was seventh. Formerly ranked number four, Nadal lost 400 points as he was unable to defend his title at the Spanish capital.

The 28 year-old could now encounter possible scenarios of playing against highly ranked players as early as the quarter finals at Roland Garros.

Novak Djokovic continues to dominate the ATP rankings, followed by Swiss Roger Federer and Scot Andy Murray. Canadian Milos Raonic and Czech Tomas Berdych climbed up to fourth and fifth respectively whereas Japanese Kei Nishikori slid down to sixth. Nadal is now seventh, ahead of compatriot David Ferrer. Swiss Stan Warinka and Croatian Marin Cilic tail behind to conclude the top ten.
