Italian Open: Djokovic defends title by beating Federer

World number one Novak Djokovic has defended his Italian Open title after a stunning showdown against the Roger Federer in the finals

Both individuals were neck to neck in the first set but the Serb eventually dominated it faultlessly after ten games to seal a 6-4 win in the first set.

Djokovic then continued his fine momentum in the second set, winning it 6-3 to effectively secure the title.

“So far, this is the best season of my life,” Djokovic said after the match. “I don’t know how it will go at Roland Garros, but I’m very confident.”

“I’m playing with great joy and concentration and I hope to continue.This has been a very exciting week and today was my best match. It’s always a big challenge to play Roger and obviously I’m very pleased.”

This is Djokovic’s 19th win in 39 matches against Federer. The 27 year-old will be looking to clinch his second Grand Slam title of the year, when the French Open gets underway this week.
