Amri Yahyah defends Nazmi; urges fans to provide support

Malaysian forward Amri Yahyah has urged fans to forgive Nazmi Faiz for his spitting fracas and offer moral support to help him grow as a footballer.

The young Malaysian midfielder spat in the direction of a Timor Leste player last Friday and was sent off for his actions during the game. However, AFC decided to extend his punishment after reviewing the incident – announcing that he will be suspended for six games, yesterday.

Fans have taken to social media to criticize the player for his actions, while names like Khairy Jamaluddin and Stanley Bernard Samuel have also labeled his act as a ‘disgraceful one’. Amri on the other hand, seems to disagree.

“Only he knows as to why he reacted in that manner,” Amri told Harian Metro.

“We can’t judge him, because we don’t know what happened between him and the other player. But I hope Nazmi doesn’t feel battered with the punishment.

“It’s normal for things like this to happen in football. What’s important is that he learns from this incident, and doesn’t make the same mistake in future.”

Amri himself, was once in the same position. Back in 2004, he was handed a RM48,000 fine for spitting during a national team match against Kuwait. That was followed by a five-year hiatus from the national team, before he made his return in 2009.

“This incident has happened to me before. I hope we can give him the moral support he needs, so he can continue developing as a football player,” Amri added.
