Nicol David plays down talks of losing number one spot

National squash queen Nicol David refuses to hit the panic button even after acknowledging her throne as world’s no. 1 player is in danger, as Egypt’s Raneem El Weleily closes in.

The Penang born Nicol has so far collected 3, 241.76 points in total, with Raneem in second place with 3, 199.82 points.

However, the difference of merely 41.94 points does not affect Nicol’s focus in continuing her journey in the sport.

“I’m very happy to be in the number one spot for nine years. Of course I would do anything to defend my position, and will try to maintain it.”

“But one day will come when my rank drops, and if that’s the case, I’ll still continue training and competing as usual.”

“My focus now is towards improving my weaknesses and proficiency in the court,” said the 32-year-old to Kosmo.

Nicol has been having an off season, after only winning the Cleveland Classic in February and the Asia Individual Championship last May.

The Malaysian athlete is expected to further distance herself, in terms of points, from second placed rival when she takes part in the China Open, which is to be held 3-6th September.
