“You’ll not survive on your own” – BAM to national shuttlers

Badminton Association Malaysia’s Kenny Goh has warned local shuttlers against leaving the organization, claiming that they would struggle to maintain their career as independent athletes.

Judging by the current economic conditions in Malaysia, Kenny said that it’s extremely difficult for athletes to get sponsors, and pointed out that BAM’s funding would then be pivotal for their participation in tournaments.

“Those who decide to leave BAM will find it extremely hard to get sponsors,” he told Harian Metro.

“We’ve done some alterations to our financial packages, and we’ve now opened the option for shuttlers to also seek external asisstance in terms of fundings.

“But it’s already difficult enough for BAM athletes, imagine how it would be if they were independent. Even Lee Chong Wei struggles to get sponsors these days,” he added.

Meanwhile, Kenny conceded that he has been offered the job of being Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at the Badminton Asia Confederation (BAC). However, he’s not made a decision on that matter yet.

“Yes, I have received an offer from BAC, though no decision has been made. Right now, I’m still discussing with BAC and BAM,” he clarified.
