Hakimi succumbs to pressure, bows out of World Championships

National triple jump athlete, Muhammad Hakimi Ismail has failed to progress to the final stages of IAAF World Athletics Championships, in Beijing, China.

The 24 year old could only manage 15.93m in his jump, far away from his best SEA Games record (16.76m) and ended up finishing 27th out of 28 participants.

Making his first appearance at the world stage, Muhammad Hakimi admitted that his lack of experience forced him to yield to pressure, which evidently affected his performance.

“My overall performance was quite disappointing compared to my personal best. This is also my first appearance in such a prestigious tournament, so I think I pushed myself too hard until I lost my rythm.”

“I expect to gain more opportunities to represent Malaysia at the highest level so that I can mend my weaknesses,” he told Sinar Harian.
