ATP Malaysian Open: Ferrer edges over Lopez to clinch title

David Ferrer has clinched the Malaysian Open title after sealing a narrow two-set win over fellow Spaniard, Feliciano Lopez.

Ferrer was competing in his 50th ATP Tour final, against a man who knocked out Nick Kyrgios in the semis yesterday, and the match appeared to be a tight one from the get go.

Ferrer took the first point, though Lopez bounced back to make it 1-1. The similar pattern repeated itself until Ferrer went a service break down at one point. But the 33 year-old responded by forcing two set points of Lopez’s serve, winning the first set 7-5.

Ferrer carried his tempo into the second set and was leading Lopez 1-0, before even claiming a 0-40 advantage on Lopez’s serve, though the second seed eventually held on to make it 1-1.

As the match proceeded, Ferrer upped his tempo and eventually took his eight break point of the set, avoiding a tie break and completing a comfortable 7-5 win to seal his 25th ATP title.
