AFF Futsal Championship: Malaysia off to perfect start

Malaysia men’s futsal team impressed the fans as they thrashed Brunei 9-1 in the opening match of Group A of the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Futsal Championship 2015 at the Bangkok Futsal Arena in Thailand, yesterday.

The win has put Malaysia in a solid position to qualify for the AFC Futsal Championship in Uzbekistan next year.

Malaysian head coach, Marcelo Serpa said the team did really well and reiterated his hope of seeing them challenge the defending champions, Thailand.

“The first game is always a little bit nervous, but I think the opponent made it easy for us.

“It’s important to get three points and now we have to prepare for the game against Thailand because it’s going to be a different ball game.

“I’m happy with the performance of the team but we must always try to improve if we want to go far in the competition,” said Marcelo Serpa yesterday.

Ahmad Fawzul Hadzir Mohamad was the cream of the crop as he scored four goals while the other five goals were scored by an own goal from Brunei’s Yamin Muhammad on the 6th minute, Muhammad Fitri Muhammad Yatim on the 11th minute, Syed Aizad Daniel Syed Nasir on the 26th minute, Akmarulnizam Mohd Idris on the 28th minute and Saiful Nizam Mohamad Ali on the 30th minute.

The only Brunei consolation goal came from Faizul Jefry Zaini on the 9th minute.

Malaysia is competing in the Group A alongside Brunei, Thailand, Timor Leste and Singapore. Meanwhile Australia are in Group B together with Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos and Philippines.
