“He’s still a threat!” – Lee Hyun-Il backs Chong Wei for Rio triumph

Former World No.1 shuttler, Lee Hyun-il believes that Datuk Lee Chong Wei has what it takes to clinch a gold medal at the Rio Olympics, despite being inconsistent this year.

The 33-year-old has been struggling for form since making a return from his doping scandal earlier this year, though Chong Wei finally clinched his first title of 2015 by winning the French Open last week.

That being said, fans remain skeptical of his ability to shine in Rio next year. Hyun-Il on the other hand, thinks otherwise.

“Chong Wei can still win the gold medal, age is not a problem. He is still very competitive and very few players have defeated him.

“He went through a difficult time but he is now back to winning ways. Chen Long may be the favourite, but Chong Wei has a 50-50 chance, if he reaches the Olympics final again,” Hyun Il said, as quoted by Bernama.

Chong Wei clinched his third French Open title after defeating Chou Tien Chen from Taiwan, repeating the feat he achieved in 2007 and 2011.
