Johor DT are in a class of their own – Mehmet Durakovic

Selangor headcoach Mehmet Durakovic has heaped praises on the squad depth of their rivals Johor DT as they prepare for the upcoming season of Malaysian football.

The Southern Tigers are the reigning Super League champions, and will visibly head into the new season as massive favourites to retain their title. And as far as Durakovic is concerned, he certainly agrees with the label.

“It won’t be easy to take on Johor DT because they have the best players in Malaysia as of now,” he told Harian Metro.

“They have the advantage from every aspect including top-notch facilities. But I’m actually happy because this is precisely what Malaysian football needs.

“If you want the status of football to elevate in this country, Johor DT’s efforts are vital and needs to be replicated everywhere across the country. If possible, I’d love for my players to have access to the sort of facilities that are available in Johor right now. ”

Selangor finished second in the league last year, despite putting on a strong challenge. That being said, Durakovic believes that the battle will be far tougher this time around, with the emergence of other quality sides.

“Last season, we were solid despite losing 80 to 85% of our squad from the previous reasons. But this time around, Johor DT are in a class of their own. And then you have Pahang, Terengganu and Felda United; the season will be tough.

“But I’m part of the Selangor set-up and I’ll be doing my best for the team.”

The Malaysia Super League will kick off at the end of the month with the Charity Shield clash between Johor and Pahang on the 31st of January.
