Australian Open: Heather Watson crashes out with illness

British number one Heather Watson has been effectively knocked out of the Australian Open in Round 1 after nausea and blurred vision influenced her defeat to Tsventana Pironkova.

Despite heading into the tournament on the back of clinching her second WTA title at the Hobart International last week, Heather suffered a massive defeat on straight sets, with her opponent only taking 83 minutes to do so.

Watson’s start to the first set was very shaky and when she was trailing 2-5, she called out for both the trainer and doctor for treatment; causing a short delay.

After the treatment, the 22 year-old was able to catch up to 4-5, though Pironkova eventually seized the first set 6-4. That was ultimately the beginning of the downfall, as things fell apart on the second set.

Pironkova took advantage of the situation by increasing her tempo and ultimately clinched a 6-0 win in the second set to secure her progression into the next round and effectively send Heather Watson packing.
