Australian Open: Djokovic cruises past first hurdle

Four time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic is through to the second round of this year’s edition after beating Slovenia’s Aljaz Bedene in the first round.

Despite being bogged down by illness over the weekend, Djokovic showed no signs of rust as he cruised to victory on straights sets, clinching it 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

Bedene was visibly struggling to keep up with the top seed, and unfortunately picked up a right hip injury; receiving treatment halfway through the third set.

Djokovic’s win means that he moves one step closer towards winning the inaugural Grand Slam of the year for a record fifth time, though there is still a considerable amount of hurdles to overcome.

The 27 year-old will either face Russia’s Andrey Kuznetsov or Spain’s Albert Ramos in the second round of the competition.
