McLaren was Alonso’s only option – David Coulthard

Former McLaren driver David Coulthard claims that Fernando Alonso’s move to McLaren is a “marriage of convenience”.

Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, who was contracted to Ferrari till the end of the 2016 season, agreed to mutually terminate his contract and leave the Italian team at the end of last year.

He then waited a little while before announcing his move to McLaren; a move that was never part of his plans, according to Coulthard.

“Ferrari got Alonso to sign the release to leave the team early and he went right across to Mercedes where there was no space.” Coulthard told IANS

“So he ended up at McLaren… it is a marriage of convenience rather than desire,”

McLaren ended their 20 year-old engine partnership with Mercedes and they will now partner with Honda for the upcoming season.
