Badminton is our only hope for an Olympic gold – Khairy J

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin believes that Malaysia’s chances of securing its first gold medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics still depends on badminton.

In Malaysian sports history, badminton remains the one sport to have contributed the most amount of wins in Olympics, considering that it has garnered five gold medals thus far, with diving coming second.

“As for now and the foreseeable future, I can say that our chances of winning a gold medal would still be from badminton,” Khairy told Harian Metro.

“I’ve seen their recent performances. I do not think that we have chances of clinching gold in any other sport except badminton, unless archery or some other sport manages to pull of a heroic stunt.”

Malaysian hero Datuk Lee Chong Wei has secured two silver medals for Malaysia thus far; one in 2012 and the other in 2008 while Rashid Sidek clinched bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Four years prior to the 1996 Atlanta Olypics, Razif Sidek and Jalani Sidek also clinched silver medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
