Jin Wei remains defiant despite Podium Program snub

National badminton prodigy Goh Jin Wei is determined to continue propelling her career forward, despite being excluded from the Podium Program earlier this week.

The 16 year-old is already widely recognized within the country as the next big thing in Malaysian badminton. But she was surprisingly excluded from the Podium Program, which is designed to provide world class training programs for talented athletes within the country.

Rumours suggest that the program is mainly there to prepare athletes for the upcoming Rio Olympics, and that Jin Wei will eventually be added into the program as she develops in future. While there has been no official statement on that, Jin Wei sees no reason to stop pushing hard.

“I’m definitely frustrated, because BAM previously told me that I’d be listed. But I accept the decision as the immediate focus of the program will be shifted towards athletes competing at the Rio Olympics,” she told Harian Metro.

Only seven badminton players were included in the program, as announced during the launching ceremony earlier this week – Datuk Lee Chong Wei (men’s singles), Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong (men’s doubles), Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei (women’s doubles) and Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying (mixed doubles).
