Man of the Match: Penang 4-1 Pahang

He small, he’s quick, he’s agile and he’s certainly got an incredible eye for goal. Faiz Subri raised eyebrows all over the world with an outrageous free-kick strike earlier today, but he also raised plenty of eyebrows within the country, for his overall performance.

Jackson Tiago opted to start Faiz Subri and use him as their focal point of attack, despite going against a side that plays two foreign central defenders in the form of Nejc Potokar as well as Zesh Rehman.

But Faiz justified his choice within three minutes into the game. After receiving a throw in on the right flank, he turned around and unleashed a scorching effort that flew past Nasril Nourdin to make it 1-0.

Penang eventually doubled their lead through Matias Cordoba, but Faiz Subri continued to be a menacing threat with his runs and positioning off the ball. But he officially confirmed his heroic status after the break.

Just as Pahang were dealt with a blow after Salomon Raj was sent off for two bookable offences, Faiz Subri nets a ridiculous free-kick attempt that brought back vivid memories of Roberto Carlos’s glorious attemps.

It’s one think to score the goal. It’s another to exude so much confidence and swagger en route to actually scoring it. There’s pressure in even contemplating the effort. Faiz took it one step further by executing it to perfection.

And when he was brought off with 15 minutes left on the clock, there was rousing reception throughout the stadium. To think about it, it wasn’t just for his monumental performance tonight, but rather for what’s to come in the next few months. We’ve got to keep an eye on this lad.
