Malaysia handed tough draws for Thomas & Uber Cup

The national badminton team will have a hard time at the Thomas & Uber Cup finals after being drawn in the same group with the likes of South Korea and China.

The 29th edition of the Thomas Cup and the 26th edition of the Uber Cup are scheduled to be held from May 15 to May 22 at the Kunshan Sports Centre in Kunshan, Jiangsu, China.

The national men’s badminton team have won the Thomas Cup five times, most recently in 1992 and ended up as runner-up of the tournament a record number of nine times. The national women’s badminton team have never made it past the quarter-final stage.

According to the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) official website, the Thomas Cup squad are drawn in Group C alongside the likes of South Korea, England and Germany. The Uber Cup squad will face China, Denmark and Spain in Group A.

A total of sixteen teams have qualified for the Thomas & Uber Cup based on their rankings.

Thomas Cup:

Group A: China, Japan (defending champion), France, Mexico
Group B: Indonesia, India, Thailand, Hong Kong
Group C: South Korea, Malaysia, England, Germany
Group D: Denmark, Chinese Taipei, New Zealand, South Africa

Uber Cup:

Group A: China (defending champion), Denmark, Spain, Malaysia
Group B: South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Mauritius, United States
Group C: Thailand, Indonesia, Bulgaria, Hong Kong
Group D: Japan, India, Australia, Germany
