“Abolish the M-League if we can’t ensure basic safety”

Malaysian football critic Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dr. Khoo Kay Kim believes that hooliganism is an issue that needs to be taken seriously by football authorities within the country – claiming that the M-League deserves to be shut down if basic safety can’t be ensured for supporters.

This statement comes after the recent incident at the Selayang Stadium last week, right after the FA Cup match between Kuala Lumpur and Perak. Crowd unrest was triggered towards the end of the game, and it escalated after the final whistle was blown, causing a state of panic amongst fans.

While Dr. Khoo was quick to admit that hooliganism isn’t new in Malaysian football, he insisted that it was an issue that needs to be dealt with as soon as possible.

“If football violence can’t be dealt with, might as well demolish or shut down the football league in Malaysia,” he told Harian Metro.

“This issue is a not a new one, it has happened before but, there were no reports saying that sharp items such as knives were being used to cause harm, until last week’s incident occurred,” he explained.

“Previously, there were only cases where rocks were being thrown at each other. We should not wait until someone loses their life, before we take action. If it’s this serious, we might as well shut down the league,” he added.
