Lee Chong Wei to captain Malaysia’s Thomas Cup squad

The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have announced that national hero Datuk Lee Chong Wei will take on the mantle of captaining the Thomas Cup squad whereas Goh Liu Ying will lead the Uber Cup team during the upcoming tournament in Wushan, China next month.

A few questions were raised when the association left Zulfadli Zulkiffli out of the Thomas Cup squad, as Goh Soon Huat was preferred over the United States-born player. Chong Wei Feng, who is no longer in contract with the BAM, was selected as the third singles player.

“The third singles slot calls for someone with experience to take up the challenge when it comes to the crunch, BAM technical director Morten Hansen said as quoted by The Star.

“We are a little weak in the third singles and, for us, experience matters. We need the feel-good factor in the team and Wei Feng experienced that in the last Thomas Cup in New Delhi.
