#Euro2016: England 2-1 Wales – Match Summary, Player Analysis

The hype surrounding the British derby was well-warranted as both sides played out an entertaining game in the Stade Bollaert-Delelis in Lens, culminating in a precious 2-1 victory for the Three Lions.

England dominated possession in the first-half and should have got an early lead, but Raheem Sterling failed to connect properly with Adam Lallana’s cross. Welsh wizard Bale failed to inspire his side as they struggled to move the ball beyond their own half, until Hal Robson-Kanu was brought down from 30 meters out. Bale took the resultant free-kick and Hart can only get a meaningless touch on the dipping and swerving ball, before it hit the post and went over the line.

Roy Hodgson’s side started the 2nd half in a more urgent manner by bringing on Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge for Harry Kane and Sterling. The substitutions proved to be decisive 11 minutes later when Vardy bundled in an equaliser from close range to send the English fans into a frenzy state, despite being clearly offside. The game looked like its destined to be a draw until Sturridge scored a last minute winner to give England the all-important 3 points.

Here are the top 3 players of the game:

Everyone was expecting the Welsh winger to turn up big for his country again, but he was nullified for most of the game. With that said, he was reliable when called upon by converting Wales’ only shot in the first-half into a trademark free-kick goal.

The English centre-back made a great impression again in his converted defensive midfielder role. He was responsible for the ineffectiveness of Gareth Bale throughout the game, and he proved to be useful in set-piece situations by making good use of his large build.

The Liverpool striker clearly has a point to prove in this game, and he didn’t disappoint after being given the chance by Roy Hodgson. He was involved in both of England’s goals, but his 92nd minute winner to give his side a well-deserved and important 3 points will be one of the highlights of his career.
