Lee Chong Wei begins hunt for Olympic gold with quick win

Datuk Lee Chong Wei began his quest for an Olympic Games gold medal after winning his opening men’s singles group stage match in only 19 minutes at Riocentro Pavilion 4 tonight.

The world number one is determined to make it third time lucky during the prestigious event in Brazil and showed just that when he strolled past Suriname’s Opti Suren 21-2, 21-3.

The only downfall was that he had to wait to taste his success due to a delay in the game.

The nation’s best olympian will face Derek Wong Zi Liang in his next Group A match.

Lee Chong Wei’s closest rival and reigning Olympic Games champion Lin Dan also went up the ranks after comfortably defeating David Obernosterer 21-5, 21-11 in Group E.

He has not enjoyed the final few days of the Olympics in the past two editions because he suffered heartbreaking defeats to Lin Dan in the final of the games in Beijing and London. However, he is on the form of his life and has been voted as the favourite to win the medal.

Will third time be the charm and pronounce Lee Chong Wei as one of the best in history?
