Velizar Popov to remain as Kelantan boss for 2017 MSL campaign

Kelantan FA (KAFA) have officially confirmed that Velizar Popov will be retained as their head coach for next year’s Malaysia Super League campaign.

KAFA President Tan Sri Annuar Musa made the announcement on his Facebook page tonight, revealing that Popov will be given complete freedom in building his own squad for the 2017 season.

“Had a long discussion with Popov this evening, and we spoke at length about his thoughts on this season as well as his plans for next year,” Annuar wrote on his Facebook page.

“Popov has been re-appointed for the 2017 season and he’ll be given complete freedom to select his own management team as well as players – both local and foreign.

“We are completely satisfied with his commitment and we want him to pick his dream team and ensure that 2017 is a glorious year for Kelantan. All the best coach!,” he enthused.

Popov joined Kelantan in May, replacing K. Devan, who was unceremoniously sacked after their poor start to the season. The former Maldives national team boss had a topsy-turvy beginning, before he eventually stabilized the squad, famously overseeing their 6-1 win over East Coast rivals Terengganu, last July.

Popov’s Kelantan were also impressive in the Malaysia Cup, winning three out of their four group stage games. While they did get eliminated in the quarter-finals, Popov looks set to compensate for that failure by guiding Kelantan to a top-four finish, should they beat Perak in their final MSL game next month.
