Le Tour de Langkawi 2017 encounters last-minute route changes

The route for Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) has undergone two route changes just two weeks before the cycling event starts. The new route is not way too different from the initial one, apart from the changes made to Stage 5 and Stage 7.

Stage 5 was initially to start from Tapah to Kuala Lumpur, but was changed to Meru Raya-Kuala Kubu Bharu as Dataran Merdeka will be used to celebrate Federal Territory Day.

Stage 7 also underwent a change when the finishing destination went from Bandar Baru Bangi to Rembau, although Melaka will remain as the starting point for that stage.

“We needed to make a few changes, but those changes made gives an opportunity to stage a more exciting and unpredictable competition,” said the LTdL 2017 Chief Executive Officer, Emir Abdul Jalal.

“With that, the pre-race event and the two staring race stages will be decided in Terengganu.” he added.

LTdL initially changed the first stage by dropping Terengganu altogether allegedly without discussing with the Terengganu government with the reason being that LTdL thought the state government had pulled out from sponsoring the event.

But the matter resolved peacefully and Terengganu was reinstated to host the first stage of the tour.

The Le Tour de Langkawi will be held between 22nd of February and 1st of March. The race will start in Kuala Berang with a 124.8km opening stage, and end with a circuit around the city of Kuala Terengganu.

The tournament is organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia and managed by Ciclista Sports Sdn Bhd.
