#RevampSelangorFootball: Is Subahan Kamal the right man for FAS?

FAS needs a president.. and Datuk Subahan has come forward

Football Association of Selangor (FAS) is still in need of a president, and it looks like someone has come forward to claim the throne. Former Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president Datuk Subahan Kamal has voluntarily offered himself for the position, saying he’d be perfect for it.

The FAS president post has been vacant since Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Azmin Ali resigned two months ago due to “conflicts of interest”.

He’s willing to take up the challenge

Datuk Subahan Kamal thinks he would make a great president as he is an active member of the board, and he has been involved with Selangor football since 2003. He has also been keeping abreast of all the conflicts, dilemmas, and drama engulfing FAS.

“Whoever wins the post should be able to raise funds, be responsible for the players and staff and have a strong passion for the sport,” said Datuk Subahan, also a former U-21 team manager and national squad manager.

He is also the president of the the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC).

“If elected, it will be business as usual for me, and I have been keeping myself updated since 2003.” he told NST.

“Many are interested but they’re scared of the financial burden,” Datuk Subahan added. “I can’t say for sure I will win as it’s up to the clubs to decide. Let’s wait and see on Thursday who else is nominated. I can do for Selangor what I have done for MHC.” he promised.

Who else has expressed interest in the post?

Apart from leader of the Red Shirts, Datuk Jamal Yunos, no one else has expressed interest in taking over as president of FAS. Although, there was news about Datuk Subahan requesting Selangor’s Crown Prince Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah to step in as the president of FAS floating about last week.

Does he have support?

FAS’ Deputy President Datuk Mokhtar Ahmad has voiced his support for Datuk Subahan, saying he has what it takes to be the next president.

“He should be given a chance. He can head FAS if given the opportunity.” Datuk Mokhtar said, hinting at the FAS emergency general meeting that will happen on Thursday (23rd February).

“I believe he can take Selangor to greater heights.”

Datuk Mokhtar also noted that Datuk Subahan has a vast experience in managing sports organisations, and he is more than capable to fill in the shoes of Datuk Azmin Ali.

WHAT DO WE THINK?

FAS is in dire need of a new president, one that can rescue them from the nightmare they are facing and restore their reputation; and one who is willing to soldier on through the financial burden that the club is facing. Someone who knows that ins and outs of the club would be ideal. Although Datuk Subahan is a capable candidate, the Raja Muda Selangor has also expressed great interest in helping to revamp FAS and bring it back to its glory days. Between a crown prince and a former national coach who has been involved with Selangor for almost 14 years? We’ll go with Raja Muda Selangor, since one of the biggest issue with Selangor is the lack of funds and they need someone with deep pockets.
