#LaksaJam: Malaysia to begin hunt for potential Olympic skateboard medalist

Since the next Olympics to be held in Tokyo on 2020, will feature skateboarding as a competitive medal sport – The 1st LAKSA JAM by Laksamana Skateboards is a local Malaysian tournament with one mission: To find Malaysia’s potential Olympic skateboard medalist starting first with sending Laksa Jam’s ‘Gold’ medalist to Grand Prix Beroun, a World Cup Skateboarding sanctioned event in the Czech Republic.

This event, in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth & Sports and Laksamana Skateboards, will be held at Bukit Kiara Skate Park on the 1st of April. 50 young Malaysians will be invited to compete. The top 5 will win cash prizes. However, only one will walk away victorious with the inclusion of an all expense paid ticket to Grand Prix Beroun.

According to Kieron Brodie, owner of Laksamana Skateboards, approximately 2,500 people are expected to attend the competition. “We have more than 50 skaters in one place, bringing forth Malaysia’s best local skateboarding talent, Laksa Jam will be ‘the’ skateboarding contest of 2017! There will be food and drinks – a music concert too, it will be an awesome day for skateboarding in Malaysia! We will even have a permanent Free Skate Area for anyone to skate to their heart’s content, we won’t ever ask anyone to stop skating!”

A jaw-dropping crowd-cheering demonstration from Street League’s newest Pro Dave Bachinsky from the United States; 3 times X-Games medalist and 2 times WCS overall rankings winner Tomas Vintr from the Czech Republic; plus one of the most iconic U.S. Professional skateboarders out there – Sierra Fellers – will showcase the best that skateboarding has to offer!

Also in the Pro mix are Japan’s Daisuke Nakaura, Koya Miyasaka and Malaysia’s own Mohd Fikri Bin Zulkifly, Joe Ipoh, Boy PJ, and Kieron Brodie.

If that isn’t enough cause for excitement, double dare the person next to you to get a bird’s eye view from the zip-line we’ll have set-up across the roof of the skatepark to see which of you has the toughest nerves. While most will be at Laksa Jam for the excitement of extreme sports, some may also enjoy a stroll through our lifestyle bazaar or perhaps some snacks and refreshment from the wide variety of food trucks made available only meters away!

Towards the end of the evening, after crowning our winner, we will finish the night off with electric performances from entertainment’s rising stars in the local band and hip hop scene. So, see you there on Saturday, April 1st at the Bukit Kiara Skate Park!
