Malaysia are through to the World Hockey League final in Singapore after securing a narrow win on penalties against Asian rivals Japan.
Tan Beng Hai’s men came into the match on high spirits following their impressive run in the tournament, particularly in the 16-1 and 10-1 win over Singapore and Mexico respectively.
And they certainly started well against Japan. Marhan Jalil took only five minutes to put Malaysia ahead, but the Japanese side were equally determined and fired the equalizer on the 15th minute mark to make it 1-1.
But sides then huffed and puffed in search of the winner, but they were unable to do so, thus bringing the game into penalties. Despite Tengku Ahmad and Tajuddin Ahmad both missing their penalty shots, Malaysia converted three attempts and saved three to win the game 3-2 and effectively book their spot in the final.
Their opponent in the final will either be Oman or Poland, depending on the result of the other semi finals.
